Microbiology (M)

Bacteria in the mouth are found in the following places:

  • the gums (in gum pockets, on the surface of teeth – plaque and calculus; around the gums);
  • the decayed areas of your teeth;
  • infected root canals;
  • around the roots of infected teeth;
  • on the tongue and other soft tissue.

How do I get rid of them?

  • By tooth brushing if they are around the gums of teeth and are accessible.
  • By professional care of gum and bone tissues.
  • By removing decay and filling them.
  • By treating infected root canal teeth.
  • By removing teeth that are too heavily infected.
  • By brushing the tongue.

How much of the above can be done at home?

Except for brushing, the rest have to be done by a professional.

Does Lifeway emphasize the treatment of the microbiology of the mouth?

Yes, very much so because the root cause of many issues in the mouth is bacteria. At Lifeway, every professional periodontal treatment is preceded by an irrigation of all the gums and every invasive procedure is preceded by either a full mouth irrigation, or a anti-bacterial mouth rinse. We have special equipment that can irrigate the mouth (especially the gum pockets) to dislodge and kill the bacteria.

Besides the gums, the next arena with the most challenging bacterial issues is ‘unresolved root canal infections’. Sometimes, even after a tooth has been root canal treated, there may still be pain from the tooth. Re-root canal treatment (RCT) may help but if the infection has gone beyond the root canal into the surrounding bone, it may not resolve quickly or at all. We will then have to look for alternate ways of treating the problem.

Why do you say bacteria is the root cause of many issues in the mouth?

Because from bacteria come decay and gum disease initially. From these come the need for restorations like fillings, root canal treatment, crowns, bridges, and dentures. If teeth are lost because of decay or gum disease, the patient may then begin to have problems with the TMJ or other head and neck issues. It is as if bacteria started the cascade of problems.

That is why, in holistic dentistry, we would like to treat the problem at source instead of ‘after the fact’. That is why, in holistic dentistry, we take microbiology issues very seriously.

Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in your book were all written
The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.
