Sleep-Disordered Breathing is an important risk factor for cognitive impairment
in older women.
(Journal of the American Geriatrics Society 56:1 p. 45-50; Jan 2008) According to the researchers who studied 484 women, 1. All Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) indices were associated with cognitive impairment. The indices used were AHI (Apnea-hypopnea index), CAI (Central Apnea index), and oxygen saturation (SaO2). 2. Women with apolipoprotein E4 allele had a nearly 5 times greater odds of cognitive impairment. Sleep apnea dangerous for stroke patients
SOURCE: Archives of Internal Medicine, February 11, 2008. Sleep apnea, in which breathing briefly ceases or becomes blocked numerous times during the night, is a risk factor for early death in people who have had a stroke, according to a new study. "Sleep apnea occurs frequently among patients with stroke, but it is still unknown whether a diagnosis of sleep apnea is an independent risk factor for mortality," Dr. Karl A. Franklin, of Umea University Hospital, Sweden, and colleagues write in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The investigators report that 116 (88 percent) of the subjects had died at follow-up, which included all of the patients with obstructive sleep apnea (in which breathing is blocked by collapsing airway tissues), 96 percent of those with central sleep apnea (in which respiration controlled by the brain is interrupted), and 81 percent of patients without either form of sleep apnea. Study Links Snoring to Chronic Bronchitis
Archives of Internal Medicine (Jan 2008) A large South Korean study found frequent snoring was associated with the development of chronic bronchitis, but the researchers themselves said they aren't sure why. "It's not unusual for people with obstructive sleep apnea to have such symptoms," Dr. Robert Keeton, a research fellow at the University of Michigan Sleep Disorders Center said. "A common cause of snoring is obstructive sleep apnea." Sleep apnea causes a distinctive kind of snoring, a loud gasping every time the airways are obstructed. Obese people are more likely to experience sleep apnea, but it can occur in persons of normal weight. Enter content here |
